Julien Lagueste
Growing up in the port town of La Trinité-sur-Mer the sea has been a muse for Julien Lagueste his entire life. It is not by chance that his work is so greatly inspired by the sea. His collection is an evolution of work created for his senior thesis for his degree from Cread Institute Lyon.
Each piece in the collection is made by hand by Julien in a labor and time intensive process that makes each piece unique. The birch plywood with its organic forms, brings to mind the color and movement of the sand. The resin surfaces done in multiple layers (at least 5) give the tables a mesmerizing depth with nuances of azure, cerulean, and emerald. The tables are a conceptual and philosophical depiction of the waters of the Mediterranean, Aegean, Balearic, or other locale that evokes such strong emotions that only the sea does in human beings.
A piece from the collection, Ile de Beaute was recently chosen by the prestigious Mobilier National of France for its permanent collection.
Julien currently works out of atelier in Nantes, where is continually exploring and examining his representations of the natural world in the decorative arts.
